Overview

Strength and aesthetics, restored

When a tooth is heavily decayed, cracked or weakened by a large filling, it needs more protection than a simple filling can offer. A crown caps the entire visible part of the tooth, sealing it against further damage and restoring full chewing strength.

Where teeth are missing, a bridge spans the gap using the neighbouring teeth or implants as anchors, holding a lifelike replacement tooth firmly in place so you can eat and speak with confidence. Unlike a removable denture, a bridge is fixed and stays in your mouth. Bridges can usually replace one to a few missing teeth in a row.

We craft every crown and bridge to match the shade, shape and translucency of your natural teeth, so the result is strong, comfortable and blends in so well that most people will not notice it.

Before recommending a crown, we always check whether a smaller, more conservative repair would do the job. Our aim is to keep as much of your natural tooth as possible, and we explain the reasons behind every recommendation. Zirconia crowns and bridges are designed and milled in-house on our CAD/CAM system, using digital impressions from our intraoral scanner instead of messy trays.

Is it right for you?

Who it's for and signs you may need it

Crowns and bridges help in many different situations. Your dentist will advise which option suits your teeth after an examination and digital X-rays.

  • A cracked or broken toothA crown holds a cracked tooth together and helps prevent the crack from spreading, which could otherwise lead to losing the tooth.
  • A very large fillingWhen a filling makes up most of the tooth, the remaining walls can be weak. A crown protects what is left.
  • After root canal treatmentRoot-treated back teeth can become more brittle. A crown is usually recommended to protect them from fracturing.
  • One or more missing teethA bridge fills the gap, restores your bite and stops neighbouring teeth from tipping or drifting into the space.
  • Worn or discoloured teethTeeth worn down by grinding, or badly stained teeth that do not respond to whitening, can be rebuilt with crowns.
  • An old crown that needs replacingIf an old crown is loose, chipped or shows a dark line at the gum, we can assess it and replace it if needed.

Treatment options

Choose the right restoration for you

We offer a range of materials and bridge designs. Your dentist will explain the strengths and trade-offs of each, so you can choose with confidence.

Zirconia crowns

Exceptionally strong, completely metal-free and beautifully translucent. Zirconia is a premium choice for both front and back teeth, and suits people who prefer to avoid metal or who need a hard-wearing crown for chewing.

E-max crowns

All-ceramic crowns prized for lifelike aesthetics, ideal for visible front teeth where appearance matters most. E-max lets light pass through much like natural enamel, which helps it blend in with the teeth beside it.

PFM crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer proven strength at a more economical price point for back teeth. Over time the metal edge may show as a dark line at the gum, which matters less on teeth that are not visible.

Traditional bridges

A fixed replacement tooth anchored to crowns on the healthy teeth either side of a gap. This is a well-established option, though it does mean shaping the neighbouring teeth for crowns.

Cantilever and Maryland bridges

Conservative bridge designs for specific situations that preserve more of your natural tooth structure. A cantilever bridge is anchored on one side, while a Maryland bridge is bonded to the back of nearby teeth.

Implant-supported bridges

For larger gaps, a bridge secured on implants avoids altering healthy neighbouring teeth altogether. It also helps maintain the jawbone in the area where teeth are missing.

Step by step

Your crown and bridge journey

  1. 1

    Examination and planning

We examine the tooth or gap, take RVG digital X-rays and use an intraoral camera to show you what we see. We then discuss materials and give you an itemised written estimate.

  2. 2

    Tooth preparation

Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is gently shaped to make room for the crown. We take a digital impression and choose a shade that matches your natural teeth.

  3. 3

    Temporary protection

A temporary crown or bridge protects the prepared teeth and keeps your smile intact while the final restoration is made.

  4. 4

    Fitting and adjustment

Your final crown or bridge is checked for fit, colour and bite before it is cemented in place. Small adjustments make sure it feels comfortable when you chew.

  5. 5

    Review

We may ask you to return so we can check your gums and bite once you have had time to get used to your new restoration. After that, routine check-ups, usually every six months, let us keep an eye on the crown margins and the health of your gums.

Aftercare

Caring for your crown or bridge

Crowns and bridges are strong, but the teeth and gums underneath still need daily care to keep them healthy.

Be gentle with temporaries

Avoid sticky or very hard foods on a temporary crown, and slide floss out sideways rather than pulling it up. Call us if a temporary comes off.

Expect mild sensitivity

Some sensitivity to hot or cold is common for a few days after fitting. If it persists or gets worse, let us know.

Clean under your bridge

Food can collect under the false tooth. Use floss threaders, super floss or interdental brushes daily to keep the area clean.

Protect against grinding

If you grind your teeth, your dentist may suggest a night guard. Avoid biting ice, hard sweets and pens.

Keep regular check-ups

The edge where a crown meets the tooth can still decay. Regular check-ups and cleaning help spot problems early.

Know when to call us

Contact us if your crown or bridge feels loose, your bite feels high, a piece chips off or you notice swelling or pain around the tooth. Prompt attention usually makes the repair simpler.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about crowns & bridges at our Amritsar clinic. Still unsure? Send us a message.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is the difference between a Zirconia and a PFM crown?
PFM crowns have a metal core under the ceramic and can show a dark line at the gum over time. Zirconia crowns contain no metal, are much stronger and offer natural translucency that closely resembles real teeth.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With good care they commonly last 10 to 15 years or more. Daily brushing, flossing under bridges and regular check-ups significantly extend their lifespan.
Will my crown look natural?
Yes. We match the crown to the colour and shape of your surrounding teeth, and all-ceramic options like Zirconia and E-max reflect light much like natural enamel. For front teeth, we may also take photographs to help match the shade and shape precisely.
How many visits does a crown take?
Typically two: one to prepare the tooth and take a digital impression, and one to fit the final crown. Some cases can be completed in a single visit. A temporary crown protects the tooth in between, so you are never left with a prepared tooth exposed.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so preparation is usually comfortable. Mild tenderness or sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common and usually settles on its own.
Should I choose a bridge or an implant?
Both can replace a missing tooth. An implant avoids shaping the neighbouring teeth, while a bridge can be quicker and does not need surgery. Your dentist will advise based on your bone, gums and the health of the nearby teeth.
Can a crowned tooth still get decay?
Yes. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth at the gum line can. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups help prevent this. A crowned tooth also still needs a healthy gum around it, so gum care matters as much as brushing.
Can I get a crown done during a short visit to Amritsar?
Crowns typically need two visits a few days apart, and bridges may need a little longer. Call or WhatsApp us before you travel and we'll guide you on planning your appointments.
